Hans Withoos - Photographic Paintings

This publication presents the photographic works of the internationally well known Dutch photographer/visual artist Hans Withoos (1962). The book presents an overview of the artist’s entire oeuvre (1989-2017), and it gives the readers a clear insight into the development of the artist’s work and person in relation to his historical sources of inspiration: masterpieces from art history.
The title does not literally refer to ‘Photographed paintings’, but to Withoos’ way of working as a ‘painter’ who edits and builds up his photo images layer by layer. He literally paints in and with other, new media.

The book takes us on a journey through contemporary photography on the shoulders of works of art such as the ones that have been made through the centuries from Classical Antiquity to late 20th-century (Post) Modernists. It is a tributary homage to his favourite works of art and at the same time a personal follow-up to these works, which breaks away from the original and starts a new journey. A journey with stopping places which are sometimes only vaguely familiar or are an eclectic mix & match of different sources and thus form a highly personal, private world.

The festive book launch was on 12 November in the gallery
